The Serge Mouille Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce is a design classic from the mid-20th century. Serge Mouille was a French designer known for his iconic lighting fixtures that combine sleek, functional design with dramatic shapes and a sense of movement.

The Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce is part of the Spider series, which incorporates a unique multi-armed design. As the name implies, the Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce has five arms, each with a lamp at the end. The arms are long, slim, and adjustable, evoking the legs of a spider.

The sconce itself is typically made from lacquered aluminium and steel, with a brass swivel allowing for adjustability. The lamps at the end of each arm are usually covered by aluminium 'chapeau' (hat) shades, a signature design element of Mouille's. The design is often black, but some versions come in white or other colors.

The Serge Mouille Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce is a bold, graphic piece of design. It provides both direct and indirect lighting and is often used as a feature piece in both residential and commercial interiors due to its sculptural quality.

Despite Serge Mouille passing away in 1988, his designs, including the Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce, have remained popular and continue to be produced today under the direction of his family, maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship that Mouille insisted upon.

Reproduction Serge Mouille Wall Sconce Design

A replica of the Serge Mouille Spider 5 Arms Wall Sconce is a tribute to the original mid-century French design, embodying the same striking aesthetic and functional features that make the original so coveted.

Like the authentic design, this replica features five slim, elongated arms that branch out from a central body, emulating a spider's form. Each arm is adjustable, providing versatile lighting options for a space. At the end of each arm, you'll find a lamp encased in an aluminium 'chapeau' or 'hat'-shaped shade, which is another signature element of Mouille's designs.

The replica's construction usually involves lacquered aluminium and steel, lending the piece a sleek, modernist feel. A brass swivel connects the arms, allowing them to be rotated and adjusted. Although typically black to mirror the original, some reproductions may come in other colours.

Though a replica, the goal is to retain the essence of Mouille's craftsmanship and his philosophy of creating simple yet sculptural lighting fixtures. While it might not hold the same value as an original Serge Mouille design, a quality replica offers a more accessible way for design enthusiasts to enjoy this iconic piece in their homes or offices.

The history of Serge Mouille

Serge Mouille was a renowned French industrial designer and goldsmith known for his iconic lighting designs. His fixtures are celebrated for their sculptural, modernist aesthetic, and have become enduring classics of mid-century design.

Mouille was born in Paris in 1922. From a young age, he showed a natural aptitude for design and metalwork. When he was just 13 years old, he started his training at the School of Applied Arts' silver workshop, where he studied under Gabriel Lacroix. By 1945, Mouille graduated as a goldsmith and shortly thereafter became a teacher at his former school.

During the early 1950s, interior designer Jacques Adnet, who was at that time the director of the Company of French Arts, commissioned Mouille to create a series of modern lighting fixtures. This marked a turning point in his career. His designs, while functional, were also highly sculptural, often evoking organic forms. One of his iconic designs is the "Mouille Mante Religieuse" (Praying Mantis) floor lamp, which was named for its resemblance to the insect.

His designs quickly became famous for their minimalistic style and elegant simplicity, with each piece crafted from metal and shaped into forms that suggested movement and dynamism. The "spider" lamps, with their multiple arms, and the "standing lamp with three arms" are some of his most popular designs. Many of his lamps feature a rotating brass swivel, which allows the lampshade to be directed in different ways, enhancing the functionality of the design.

In 1955, he opened his own workshop, where he continued to produce his designs on a larger scale. Despite the popularity of his designs, Mouille insisted on creating each piece by hand, giving each one a unique, artisanal quality.

Sadly, in the late 1950s, due to health issues, Mouille had to stop his production of light fixtures. He passed away in 1988, but his designs have continued to be produced by his family, which ensures the continued high standards of craftsmanship and maintains the integrity of his original designs.

Today, Serge Mouille's designs are highly sought after by collectors and continue to be celebrated for their elegance, simplicity, and sophistication. They remain a significant part of the history of modernist design.
